I still wonder if they could have made it thinner... Seems that Apple does not really want to change the iMac and Macbook Pro physical dimensions.

I'm going to MacWorld. I bought a user pass a few weeks ago. Dad followed suit since I've been home from school (30 mins from SF). So he got us tickets for 1 night at the Marriott down the street from Moscone! Paid BIG bucks for the hotel room thought...I felt kinda bad...

Oh well...Stevenote alone should be worth the sacrifice. I'm really exicited..

sorry if it's already been posted but did you all see what the text preview says
"This is a live preview. Yay leopard! It's the best thing ever. It's better that you! Thats the apple way!" wow! :p

Nice! That is awesome Apple, way to go. Another one of those features that make computing a whole lot easier and way more fun.

Many folks on this forum seem to use and rely on iDVD. I'm in that group.

I know that the world is much larger than this forum, and therefore the percentage of iDVD users to all Mac users is in fact very small. But...

If Apple does drop iDVD it will be another example of blantant disregard for customer's requests.

This may be obvious for many, but for me, it will be the final confirmation that Apple has moved on from the "digital hub" strategy of 1998 - 2007.

Remember when they made all this cool software to help sell Macs? With iPhone and iPad success this is simply not required any more.

I dont think this is right - they're not moving away from the digital hub, they're recreating a different digital hub - Apple isn't necessarily thinking how do we facilitate the creation of dvds so people can make home videos and share them with friends - they're going to the root - what's the best way of distributing videos - right now, upload to the internet is much faster and much more widely used then DVD burning.

Don't forget that in 1998 they dropped the floppy and people had the same attitude you do now. It's great being an Apple customer, they are on the frontline of new technology but they do drop fading technology first too. Pretty soon the usb drive itself will be dropped from the macs as well - what will be the alternative? idk - for flash drives maybe phones will be portable flashdrives connected through wifi or something - by the time they get rid of the superdrive all apple software will be either download or usb stick - no need - people will complain - 7 years later compaq computers wont have them either and we'll be laughing at them for finally catching up although they will then be behind. I have nothing against iDVD but like i said earlier it wont disappear, support will still be available for 3 years or so and iDVD will not disappear from your apps.

Anyway my point is i don't think apple is ignoring their user base - Steve Jobs said at one point "It's really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don't know what they want until you show it to them."

In other words, they might be replacing the software with something that does that job better, and the job is not creating DVDs, the job is distributing media in a beautiful way - maybe we will see the an app in iLife that was rumored before about making something like the Movie extras, with menus and other content - similar to iDVD but then its to upload or stick somewhere else or on your apple tv or on your iphone or ipad - i don't know, i don't work for apple - that's why i pay them, to think for me and show me what i want, cause i don't know. I have ideas as to where things might end up but i really don't know for sure.

    My 2 cents.

As so many other posters, the fact is that you have no idea what transpired. The driver is prima facie guilty of attempted murder. Nothing more needs to be said. I do not understand the number of otherwise reasonable people here who are blaming the victim.

Then get out of the thread is nothing more is to be said. However...

Both should be thrown in jail and left to rot. Unfortunately there's no law against stupid so only the guy will get his day in court.

Modern society as done away with the concept of personal responsibility in such a bad way that now people like Skunk and others are just saying "victim" instead of calling it like it is : Lack of judgment. You don't jump on the hood of the car of a man/woman trying to leave in anger. At that point, all bets are off and if you do think you're going to manage to stop him you're an idiot and you deserve the bodily harm you suffer if any.

That doesn't excuse the person who will harm you, but it shouldn't excuse you from putting yourself in such a dangerous situation either.

I don't know, looks to me like a Dell T5500 with no monitor and configured fairly close to the base Mac Pro costs $2962.00 after a $520 discount. Its three-year warranty is more like Apple Care. The processor is slightly faster and the RAM runs at 1333MHz. The Dell needs an optional FW card but doesn't say whether it's FW400 or 800. Also I didn't see a mention of optical sound.

That's a dual processor version, you can compare that machine with the octad or dual hex Mac Pro when you select the same processors, but not with the base Mac Pro.

Does it not depend the PPI that the image is ? If they have made the image at a PPI that the the same as the iPad 1/1.5, then you may have a point. However, if they made the image at a higher PPI, say 300+, then your point is moot.

I would say it's unlikely that they make images at such higher PPI, at least not in the final app. It increases the cost, the file size, the app complexity with no obvious gain. I'm highly skeptical.

You know what I would tell Steve Jobs, to shut the <insert> up. Real world testing is different than the professional developer testing they did. It's a huge problem and SJ is trying to downplay it. Well after Consumer Reports denying supporting the product, Apple is in the real <insert>hole with the iPhone 4. I don't know about you guys but I am tired of all of Steve Jobs snide remarks and responses to a huge problem.

I can hear it now from whoever is speaking tomorrow.

"You guys need to shut up. Steve Jobs told you to hold it differently or put case on it, SO DO IT!"

    *Walks off stage*

That's what I predict will happen.

Last time I checked, the display is not included in the Mac Pro

Just because you can buy a PC system which includes the monitor, don't think you getting the monitor for free. You can bet its price is added in total cost of the system. Often that monitor is cheaply made to lower the price of the complete package.

Stereo speakers. Most of use can tell if a sound is in front of us or behind or above or below and we only have two ears. You can make 3D recording with ony two channles but the playback geometry has to be near perfect. Synthetic sound cues are not recordings and it need not be perfect to work. All it would have to convey is any one of six basic directions and the users will all be trained to listen for it carfully and wiling to set up the speakers in exact locations. It might be helpfull to someone who is blind. I know some one who is and he can sometimes tell who enters a room and from where before the person speaks. If this is the target user then it need not be perfect or even natural sounding

Technically you need 3 speakers to produce 3d sound. Manufacures claim they can do it with 2 but they don't. You need a center channel to balance the sides.

My iPhone 4 rocks. I feel the need to share my joy since 80% are complaining. Yes I am a fanboy but my iPhone 4 works flawlessly. I can hold it in my left hand, right hand, foot and it still works. I thought maybe it was just my city but I am out and about this week traveling and it works like a charm. Someone needs to tell Steve that I must have his unit.

You're making a straw man argument by bringing up the Honda/Acura comparison. That's not what people have been arguing. People have been arguing that there *is* something unique about the Mac product *itself* that isn't tied to the branding or the perceived "prestige".

As I mentioned before, it's like comparing a fully loaded Ford Taurus with an entry level BMW. Driving a Ford Taurus is never going to *feel* like driving a BMW. The handling is going to feel totally different. Believe or not, some car buyers are loyal to a particular brand and are willing to pay more, for reasons that have nothing to do with prestige. I mentioned BMW's handling but it could be something else like: safety (e.g. Volvo, at least in the old days), reliability (e.g. Lexus, consistently top rated by Consumer Reports), comfort/smooth ride (e.g. Mercedes). The point is, you're missing the point if you think a Mac's appeal is only as a status symbol.

I'm not contending that the Macs increasing popularity is solely caused from a perceived "prestige" factor, but that is certainly helping matters. And a trip to your local snooty coffee shop is ground zero for the people who purchase products solely to be seen with them.

Like I said earlier, most of the people here are mac diehards - not fad followers. But I am saying that the majority of the boost Apple is experiencing IS from fad jumpers. Like it or not, it is what it is and it's exactly what Apple marketing wanted to happen.

Personally, I haven't heard much about system failures beyond the launch systems. It's unlikely more of launch systems failed then didn't. I have a launch system myself, and the majority of 360 owners have not had problems.

There have been quite a few red ring of death posts and articles around the net even within the last few months. The problems are still there.

    Me. :(
Bought my system Nov06...manufacture date of May06.
Died 3 weeks ago, sent for repairs, got it back in 6 days. :o

I hope it doesn't crap out again before the warranty's up otherwise I'm going to be very very pissed off. :p :D

This isn't 3D at all. It's a 2D image that is adjusted through headtracking. If you move a 3D character in a game using a controller; that isn't mimicking a 3D display.

All 3D is a 2D image that is manipulated in such a way that the brain is tricked into seeing 3 dimensions. How is this any different exactly?

I'm excited Steve is on board for this book. I just hope it isn't because he is dying and wants to approve of his own book before he dies.

I really do hope that this biography by Isaacson doesn't end up being Jobs' epitaph, too. :(

Jobs' amazing vision changed the way computers were designed and pioneered the graphical user interface for home computers, totally changed the music industry, totally changed the cellphone industry and now becomes the first company to make a viable tablet computer (one wonders what would Alan Kay--who created the Dynabook concept--would say about the iPad).

    Not paint, point.

With a black bezel, the whitest point of the screen looks like white to your eyes.

With a white bezel, the bezel is the whitest, so white on the LCD never looks white. it usually looks blue or yellow.

OH, I see what you're saying now. Yeah, the frame is always whiter than the glass, at least after a while, since they change colors after a while. My frame, front panel, home button, and back panel are all different shades of white. Were all the same when I first got them. I'm assuming that the real white i4 will be the same way.

Apple support on a Motorolla device, not the other way around. At least to my knowledge, they didn't take that support away. I can't see Apple allowing users to continue to stream Netflix on ATV2 if they introduce a service that directly competes.

Maybe you're right, though. I won't be a happy camper though... Take away Netflix and my ATV2 is an overpriced movie trailer player.

if Apple were to build ther own TV, They wouldnt build an ungodly amount at first, would they. wouldnt they test the waters a bit. With the better content and a subscription not too much higher than NETFLIX, I think they would have a monster.

I agree. Nike shoes are the least of our worries when it comes to tracking.

As you said above, someone could simply watch you go by. Since cameras can now transmit their images to facial recognition software, that process could be automated as well.

And when we're calling 911 from our cell phones or trying to find our lost dog with the implanted chip or our car with the LoJack, we're glad that all of these tracking systems are in place.

I'm full of suggestions, if only because I've been through this exercise many times before (I used to belong to another online group that got together at MWSF.) Mass dinners are difficult to organize and problematic. Somebody has to take charge, keep a count and make the reservations -- essential for a large group. Some people won't be able to make it on any given night. Then, even after you get to the restaurant, you only get to talk to the people on either side of you and across the table. Somebody always seems to depart early without leaving enough money to cover their meal. It's just a less than ideal situation all-around, IMO. If meeting other MR members is the objective, I strongly recommend picking one or two times a day on more than one day to gather at the seating areas in South Hall. Agree to mark your badges in some unique way. Smaller more manageable groups will form to go off for lunch, dinner or drinks. This really does work better than trying to get everyone into one restaurant.
