I called local office of the local congressman. The lady listened to me attentively and then advised me to call Washington office. She said the staff over there would be able to tell me how the congressman would vote on these bills.
I called Washington office also but there the operator said the person who looks into these matters is not at desk and advised me to leave a voice mail. I have left a detailed voice mail with my contact info.
I have to call 3 more congressmen from CHC and I will finish that in a short while.

Nebraska Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson told the Omaha World Herald newspaper that there has been talk that House and Senate negotiators will not even meet to work out their differences, which would doom passage of immigration legislation before the November mid-term elections.
Bush has stressed both sides must be willing to compromise. As an example, he said Congress should decide whether to reduce the number of "green cards" issued to permanent legal residents if there are too many immigrants.
Bush lost a debate last year to overhaul the Social Security benefits system, despite traveling the country holding campaign-like rallies. His efforts in the immigration debate are beginning to look like a similar national campaign with stops in Texas and New Mexico on Tuesday.
Trying to nudge immigrants into learning English and assimilating into U.S. culture, Bush dropped in on a U.S. history and civics class for immigrants at the Catholic Charities Juan Diego Center.
Getting into the spirit of the class, he asked students which presidents had sons follow them into the White House, then answered in Spanish.
He and his father, Bush said, and John Adams and his son, "Juan Q." Adams.

sundarpn,
I applied for a new passport from the Indian Embassy in Washington DC in Nov '06 as my old one was expiring. Got the new passport in 2 weeks from the day I mailed the application.
Don't bother calling them . You will not get through to anyone. Just wait it out . It should come in 2 weeks.
Hope this helps.
how about Washington DC consulate?
I am hoping they are more prompt. It has been 5 working days since I sent mine....

Dhundun,
You should have filed in July'07 for your son and he was eligible that time even he might have completed 21 years as your I-140 was pending for enough time.
Now you have to wait for date to become current and calculate:
1) Total processing time period for your I-140
2) Your PD become current
3) Completion of your son's 21 years must not have surpassed the processing time for I-140 before you can file his I-485

Thanks akerd, for posting the link about Accenture-India head count surpassing Accenture-US head count.
Now allow me to ask questions from some members of this form who tend to use the phrase "Indian companies" with negative connotation in their every post.
Do you think Accenture to be an "Indian Company"?
http://inhome.rediff.com/money/2007/apr/06it.htm
Check the above link too...
"The numbers speak for themselves. Accenture expects to reach 35,000 by the end of this financial year, a 52 per cent increase over last year. IBM already has 53,000 people in India, a 23 per cent increase over the previous year. By the end of the current financial year, Tata Consultancy Services plans to add 30,000 employees, taking its total headcount to 113,500. US-based Capgemini plans to employ 40,000 professionals by 2010."

Sorry to hear about your aging out issue. I think there are more out there than anyone realizes.
My son aged out while I was waiting for labor cert clearance too. He is now 22 and has been in the US since was 14.
I hope and pray every day there will be some relief for our families.
Every now and then another case pops up here on immigration voice and I feel it entirely appropriate that this issue is put in with the aims of the group since it is a problem entirely created by the broken employment based immigration process.
Please listen to our voices core group and do not forget us. We are in the same queue as you all whose children benefit as derivative green card applicants, our children are just a little older when they came here and have become forgotten victims.

I will add my $100 & send the checks. One more co-worker will put in $50 through the credit card.
Let us all try like this from our co workers. I think guys do not mind paying but are too lazy to write the check. So we need to chase them...
One more technique, I have used.... give your friend $10 or $20 in cash & ask him to go online and contribute an amount by adding some money to your cash contribution...

So are you saying that date will go back in the middle of the month?
During this period they approved applicants whose date was not current. These persons are getting GCs and there is a thread for such applicants. It is possible that there are 40K+ such persons. Hence, the following does not matter.

Chintu: Explain Wash sale rules too... taxes are a pain with day trading.
Also, ppl on H1B have to be really careful about not getting classified as "active traders." That IMHO could jeopardize status. All who want to get into day trading, do your research. Make sure you know what you are getting yourself into.
Investments are not reflected on W2. If you use a broker such as TDAmeritrade etc they will issue you a 1099
You will receive an IRS Consolidated Form 1099 - an all-inclusive document showing your reportable income and transactions for the entire tax year - if your brokerage account received at least $10 in either dividends, interest or original issue discount (OID) income, or had an equity sale, in the 2008 tax year.
- You will not receive a Consolidated Form 1099 for a retirement account, tax-exempt account, corporate account or foreign account.
- In addition, you may receive a corrected Consolidated Form 1099 if you held an investment trust that reclassified income after this form was sent to you.
There are 2 sets of rates.
1. Short Term Captial Gains
2. Long Term Capital Gains Taxes
Short term capital gains taxes are on stocks that have been held less than one year before selling.
Long time term capital gains taxes are on stocks that have been held more than one year before selling.
Long term capital gains taxes are less than short term capital gains taxes.
If you don't sell the stock, there is no tax on the capital gains.
The amount of tax depends your tax bracket.
The taxes on dividends are usually less than short term capital gains tax. So if you have a stock that is about to pay a dividend, get the dividend before selling, as that will reduce your capital gains.
Hope this helps

I E-Filed my 2nd EAD Renewal on 04/30/2010 and when answering the current immigration status in E Filing application as there is no appropriate option I left Blank and submitted. This is my second E-Filing , when I was first filed renewal this question is not there.
After a week I sent my photos along copy of 485 Receipt, copy of I 140 approval receipt, previous copies of EAD & copy of Driving License with a covering letter saying that I left the current immigration status filed is blank on the online form and I mentioned my current immigration in the covering letter as Pending I-485 based authorized stay.
Yesterday I got the email from USCIS On May 20, 2010, we ordered production of your new card. Please allow 30 days for your card to be mailed to you. If we need something from you we will contact you. If you move before you receive the card, call customer service at 1-800-375-5283.
( First time I got one year, when renewal lost time I got two years, this 2nd Renewal).

I have spoken about IV to several friends, colleagues, acquaintances and relatives who are stuck in retrogression or likely to be affected by it sooner or later. I have found it very hard to orally convey effectively what IV does and how it benefits people like them. Of those to I have spoken to only 4 or 5 have become members of IV. Also, I think a lot of people, including me, find it difficult (shy, I guess) to directly approach people and canvass about anything.
I have also sent emails to these and several others about IV. Not sure how many read it and how many have become members. Nowadays chain and mass emails have become so ubiquitous, most people ignore or delete them, no matter who sends them.
Someone might have already done this or proposed this already, not sure
Here is what I will be doing to increase awareness about IV:
I think direct mail, although costs money, is one of the most effective way of communicating ideas and organizations like IV. People take this more seriously than emails.
In the next few days I will make a list of people (at least 30) that I want to convey about IV to and send them direct mail about IV. This will be done by printing the brochures and text of email IV has published and send it to them via postal mail. I may not have the postal addresses of all of them, but I should be able to find out by doing a reverse lookup on their phone numbers. I am also thinking of sending it to their work address if I can not find their home address.
In a few days, I will post again letting you all know how many direct mails I sent.
Here is what IV can do:
If IV thinks this is an effective way to increase membership they can do the following: Have members send them postal addresses and money towards postage and stationery. E.g. 50 cents per address. IV can send postal mails to the people (addresses given by members).
I think this is better than members sending themselves because IV can fine-tune the message and messages have more gravity if it comes from a non-profit instead of an individual person. (Others may disagree with this statement). Some may want to canvass about IV but may want to remain anonymous. Those who do not want to remain anonymous should have the option of adding their name/address at some appropriate place in the letter.
Another suggestion is that IV should publish a comprehensive direct mail package (and guidelines) that can be downloaded and printed by members like me who want to send direct mails

which world you live in????
H1B was not started to help people from all over world, It was started to help US corporates to fight talent crunch..
If someone is responsible for the current state of affairs in the H1B area , It is Indian firms . The H1B1 was started in 'GOOD FAITH ' by United States to help people from "all over the world" to come in and work in the US , but large Indian IT houses have overexploited these loopholes so much that we are currently in this sorry state of affairs . In their greed for higher and higher profits(every Indian firm hits 30% profits every quarter ) they have spoiled a perfectly working program a few years ago to such a state that now getting an H1B has got less nothing to do with talent but has become like buying a supperlotto ticket .Below is a very good article from the "Economic Policy Institute " that highlights the fact that 2 well known Indian firms have single handedly lapped up 65% of H1B visas last year and have applied for just 69 green cards . Thats a GC application rate of 0.0004%. i Cannot help agree with the facts in this article. I totally agree that firms like these which abuse the system ought to be severely punished and blacklisted, so that geniunine US companies can get their required workers , when they need them . Dear All,
The idea about the oath is good. Most of us do great, creative things at work and earn the appreciation of our peers and seniors. Why not we brainstorm now, come with creative ideas to help ourselves?
Guys the Satyagraha and Anthem are good ideas and can be implemented. There is no shortage of good ideas.
The shortage is of people who will participate and do things. Less than 50 have registered so far.
Of course you understand talking face to face with lawmakers in large numbers is the best way to convey our ideas. Why are we talking about mails when the goal of this thread is to meet them ?
