I don't know whether this has been requested yet, but I think that there should be a page on the guide where apps that run in rosetta are listed, along with performance rating, and possible UB alternatives.

I think it'd be really helpful.

The VPN server is an AVM 7270 router/modem/voip box.
So you think she has to manually connect to the ip adress of my MacPro to be able to download files remotely?
How would I do this? Is it done in Finder somewhere?

    In the Finder:

Menu Bar > Go > Connect to Server > Mac Pro IP or what ever the name of your machine is called Mac-Pro.local

And your done, might even bookmark it if you use it often.

I still can't believe you lot in the USA have gone for yet another incompatible-with-the-rest-of-the-world frequency for your 3G network meaning that anyone coming to the USA won't be able to use your 3G network and your 3G iPhones will be about as useful as a one legged dog outside the USA.

It's interesting that the T-Mobile guy thinks that the prime use for 3G in the USA will be email and other user generated content and not music though. Personally the last thing I want is content rich email on my mobile phone.
Its most likely because most people here still just use their cellphone as a phone and nothing more. My phone is internet capable but I sure am not paying their ridiculous prices just to check the weather or my email when I'm away from a broadband connection. And why would I pay to download ringtones when I can make my own higher quality ones? I mean, that's just stupid.

But I agree, US companies are just so "US only" in their thinking. It really just limits them.

Let's face it, Microsoft can't compete. iWork needs a spreadsheet and you'll be hard pressed to find a reason to run anything Microsoft on your mac.

Well, let's say you are working on a Mac (bless you) and all your co-workers are using a PC. Suddenly, you have to work on the same documents (like a .doc, a .ppt or a .xls) Call it "incompatibility"...

I don't like MS but a lot of peoples (over 90%) still do...

really? breathe deep and try that again, you're not even close.

You might want to look stock prices if you doubt his comment about Microsoft. I've had Apple stock less than two years and have over doubled my initial $50K investment.

Umm...this is all taken directly from their twitter. Comex himself responded to someone asking if they should wait for ion1cs untethered for a 4.3 and up jb or if he was doing one and he said to wait. There literally no indication right now that he's working on a 4.3 jb for the iPad 2. Joshua (of green poison fame) is, as far as I know, the only one that has directly stated that he is in the process of working on an iPad 2 jb. This doesn't mean that comex is not working on another exploit for the iPad 2, but telling people that he definitely is is wrong. Im pretty sure the directory you are talking about is where the exploit was at before 4.3.1.

I never said he was working on an second exploit. His 4.3 Tethered is all I mentioned. They are working on it, and MuscleNerd even said today they are working on making it legal to distribute. 4.3.1 for iPad 2 as this time is probally in the back burner. All that is really needed is for the iPad 2 4.3 to publicly Jailbroken. If someone updated to 4.3.1 thats their fault. If someone updated to 4.3.1 they are obviously new to the game.

    Yup. Multiple restarts.

Could it be the USB connection on the Hard Drive? I've seen before some portable hard drive connections are very sensitive, try moving the USB cable around a bit and see if ejects it. But as the other guy said take it back and get a new one.

I too will be very disappointed if the scroll wheel disappears from the iPod.

I am also quite skeptical about this 'bezel-touch' idea. That's where I hold the damn thing. I can't pick up my phone without changing the ring tone level now my iPod will scroll to a new track or shoot up in volume.

    No thanks.

Errm. Cant you lock your keys on your moby then. Surely there would be a hold button like current iPods that will disable the bezel.

It's a better connection than using crimp connectors, and is how your expensive electronics are manufactured (all the components are soldered to the PCB). ;)

Soldering wire isn't as common as crimp connectors due to costs (more labor intensive to solder, as well as more expensive materials and equipment is used).

Either way will work, so it's up to you (soldered version isn't quite as messy IMO).

The one I linked was 0.5 meters. You cannot go over 1.0 meters in total cable length with SATA drives, so please keep that in mind (the signal voltage is weak, and anything longer causes stability problems).

    Skip this one.

Thanks for all the invaluable advice. I am now pretty much ready to put the order in for all the parts and upgrade this thing to 2x X5690, 2x SSD, 4x 3TB in RAID5 ,1880 Areca controller and the MaxUpgrades kit. The mac is already here, some company went bust and I picked up a new, boxed 2010 8-core machine for 2.7k with apple care which is sure as heck cheaper and less burdensome than building one from scratch.

It's a damn shame about not being able to boot off more than one volume that is on the 1880 controller as I ultimately wanted to have 2x 240GB 6G mercury drives each with a different OS in pass through mode, now it looks like I will go for a slightly cheaper SATA2 SSD for the Win 7 install since it will be off the onboard controller.

I suppose I could still RAID0 2x 240GB 6G Mercury drives and use bootcamp to install on a 240GB partition dedicated to Windows 7, but this would be a riskier setup since I would loose access to both OS if the RAID0 played up. The Mac would not have trouble booting two OS off a partitioned RAID0 volume would it?
The mercury drives do sound reliable though, do you think a RAID0 with the 2x new 6G Mercury's is viable option? Or should I get those RAID edition Mercury drives, what makes them more suitable for RAID anywhere?

In my business I provide IT support for residential and very small business customers. I don't handle any clients who are big enough to require a real Windows server like Windows Server 2003 or 2008.

However, I have installed a couple of Windows Home Server appliances for customers - mainly for backup purposes. I love the backup feature of Windows Home Server. It's the closest thing I've found to Time Machine on Windows. The problem is that Windows Home Server looks like a dead-end. HP (who had the best boxes) is getting out of the business. The new version of WHS doesn't look that great.

So, I recalled that Server will be included in Lion. A few questions:
    - is there or will there be a limit on the number of client PCs that can connect
    - can anyone recommend a free or near-free backup program for Windows that will work as well as WHS's? (automatic daily backups that are both file and image backups, and work with most recent flavors of Windows XP Home, Vista Home Premium or 7 Home Premium)
    - anything else I should consider?

As your question is really a question about windows desktop software I think you are probably asking the wrong group here...

Anyway, Your windows clients will the apple server as windows NT4 CIFS/smb server. Windows home will not to domain log-ons, which is fine because widows 7 will not auth against a samba server anyway, (which is the core of apple server's auth system for windows clients.) I'd suggest either just getting the machines your trying to back up external USB harddrives, (which will include backup software, if you shop correctly,) or getting your group of computers on MS SBS. There really isn't any product that would work well, yet be cost effective that is between those two options.

Hard drivers would be $50-$100 each
MS SBS for a very small group would be $800ish +$100 for a USB external HD to do your backups, (of the server.)
